My mom and I regularly have 1-2 hour, long phone conversations. Awhile back I started a note in my phone of things she says that are funny, wise, or poetic.
A few weeks ago we were talking about what happened with AOC at the capitol riots and how it's been a big ordeal to keep guns out of the building.
My mom was referring to how people are just inconsiderate and downright mean these days, and she kind of sighed a deep breath and said, "People are blowin' it."
I couldn't agree more.
It's really not hard to be kind and considerate. I truthfully don't understand humanity right now.
Some days you really do have to just block all of the evil out. And of course some days you have to tune in, because it's important to know what kind of world we live in.
I have found that I have to block it out as often as possible, because I'm so empathetic that if I didn't I would walk around pissed off all the time. Actually, I'd probably never leave my bed, because this shit is depresssssing.
Maybe I'm not doing it right, I don't know, but I try in my own way to speak up, show up, and stand up for the tired, the oppressed, the poor, the hungry, the overlooked. I try to be a light in the best way I know how to be and give as much of my heart as I can without burning out.
I really think that's all any of us can do. Be a light. Speak up. Show up. Stand up.
And in-between carrying the weight of the world, we have to try as hard as possible not to let that light inside of us burn out. We do that by taking care of ourselves.
Sleeping more. Eating well. Moving our bodies. Flexing our creative muscles. Listening to good music. Blowing off steam however we do that. Surrounding ourselves with love and light as best as we can. And BEING that love and light as best as we can.
"There's always light if only we are brave enough to see it, if only we are brave enough to be it." -Amanda Gorman
